In the 1960s, rattan ware manufacturers could be found everywhere throughout Guanmiao District. Nearly every household was involved in making rattan goods. In the 1970s, however, a number of rattan ware factories and companies chose to invest in Indonesia due to considera-tions of raw materials and labor costs. The industry started to dwindle in 1988 when the Indonesian government banned rattan exports as well as a lack of purchase orders from Japan and increasing wages.
